How to Help Your Dog Love Their Carrier

Chapter 5: How to Help Your Dog Love Their Carrier

The best carrier in the world won't work if your pet refuses to go near it. Carrier anxiety is common and very fixable with the right approach — patience and positive association, not force. If your pet is not loving the carrier in a single day, here is an introduction plan to help.

The 10-Day introduction plan

Day 1 — Introduction: Place the open carrier in your living room with a familiar blanket inside. Don't ask your dog to do anything with it — just let it exist in their space. Feed treats near it. Let curiosity do the work.

Day 4 — Entry: Toss treats into the carrier so your dog walks in voluntarily. Don't close it yet. The goal is for them to enter and exit freely, associating the carrier with good things.

Day 6 — Closed sessions: Begin closing the carrier for 5-minute periods at home while you're present. Or if the carrier is not enclosed, try lifting the carrier for short intervals. Give treats for each scenarios. Extend duration gradually.

Day 10 — Short outings: Take a 10-minute walk with your dog in the carrier. Then a coffee stop. Build up duration over several outings. By the end of day 10, most dogs have adjusted significantly.

The Everywhere Carrier by Good Mess is made predominantly of fabric and cotton, and shaped like a puffy bed. Many customers have been using it as a day bed which can help to accustom the pets for outdoor uses.

💡 Never use the carrier as punishment: The carrier must only ever be associated with positive experiences — treats, outings, attention. One negative association can set back weeks of progress.
